Alan Pardew says he is “100 per cent” certain Newcastle United won’t be making a sensational swoop for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney in the summer.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the 27-year-old Red Devils forward had a transfer request rebutted by the newly-crowned Premier League champions last week.

Pardew has made no secret of his frustration at his limited attacking options after Senegal international Demba Ba moved to Chelsea in January.

But although the Newcastle boss is still hoping to sign a couple of strikers when the summer window opens, Pardew rubbished speculation that Rooney could be moving to St James’ Park.

“When Demba [Ba] went in January and we didn’t secure [Loic] Remy, it was obvious that we were going to need to bring in a striker or two in this summer window, and hopefully we can,” said Pardew.

“But Rooney won’t be one of them, 100 per cent, I can assure you.”

Newcastle were embroiled in a battle for Rooney’s signature in 2005 before the former Everton youth graduate opted to sign for the Reds Devils ahead of the Magpies.
