Alan Pardew believes Darren Bent is guilty of playing it safe after the striker opted to joined Fulham ahead of Newcastle United.

The Magpies were keen to secure the England international on a season-long loan after already recruiting Loic Remy from Queens Park Rangers on a temporary deal.

Pardew worked with the 29-year-old during his spell in charge of Charlton Athletic, and the Newcastle boss was disappointed the striker opted to move to Fulham.

“It was very obvious that I thought he would do well here,” said Pardew.

“Obviously you can’t have contact with the player, but I know Darren well enough to think we had something which he was going to enjoy.

“But he has opted for Fulham and perhaps that is the safer option.”

Bent spent a season-and-a-half at Sunderland before completing a club-record £18m switch to Aston Villa in January 2011.

The forward fell out-of-favour under Paul Lambert last term, and Pardew was unsure why Bent would opt to join a smaller club than Newcastle.

“Were the Sunderland links a factor? Possibly, yes, and maybe the profile of this club,” he added.

“It is bigger than Fulham, that’s just a fact.”
