Arsene Wenger insists Nicklas Bendtner will get his chance to stake his claim for a spot in the Arsenal first-team after the striker made his first appearance for the Gunners this term at West Brom.
The Danish striker set up Thomas Eisfeld for Arsenal’s opener at The Hawthorns on Wednesday in the League Cup third-round tie before the Gunners emerged victorious in a penalty shootout.
Wednesday’s clash was Bendtner’s first appearance for the Gunners since 2011 after loan spells at Sunderland and then Juventus, before Wenger opted to keep the 25-year-old at the club despite the forward being linked with a summer move away.
And the Frenchman is confident that the striker still has what it takes to be an important player for the north Londoners.
“He’s still an Arsenal boy,” Wenger told Arsenal Player.
“You don’t arrive at a club at the age of 15 like he did and have all these years here without having any feeling for the club.
“I think he has an honest feeling for the club. He wanted to leave because he had some turbulence in his career.
“He wanted to play, you can understand that completely and I accepted it. It [the move] didn’t work and now he’s ready for a fight. He will get his chance.”
