Paul Lambert admitted Aston Villa will have to wait and see if 40 points is enough to cement their top-flight status after beating Norwich City.

Gabriel Agbonlahor made the breakthrough for the visitors in the 55th minute at Carrow Road with a 25-yard strike which beat Canaries goalkeeper Mark Bunn.

However, Chris Hughton’s men drew level when Grant Holt converted from the spot after Robert Snodgrass was fouled by Joe Bennett in the 74th minute.

But Agbonlahor, who scored in the 6-1 victory over Sunderland on Monday, netted his third goal in two appearances on the stroke of full-time to move Lambert’s men into 13th place.

“We’ll have to wait and see if the 40-point mark is the magical one. Monday and today has certainly put us right up there,” Lambert told Sky Sports.

“It’s a big win today, probably more so than Monday night’s game because of the situation surrounding Aston Villa.

“The lads were tired and we went with the same team but all credit to them. They were mentally strong to get over the line.

“I think we’ve been playing very well of late. Our form is extremely good and I’m proud of them.”

Meanwhile, Hughton admitted he was frustrated with his side’s performance and the result, which sees the Canaries drop to 15th and just three points clear of 18th-placed Wigan Athletic.

“I’m annoyed and frustrated because there was no way we should have lost or deserved to lose. We were the better side over 90 minutes but Villa have pace on the counter-attack and we have conceded two poor goals today,” said Hughton.

“Joe Bennett shouldn’t have been on the park – he was on a yellow card when he conceded the penalty and had two or three fouls after that. I find it incredible that he was still on the park.

“Next week’s game against West Brom becomes a bigger game. We will need a better performance but we can’t concede the goals we conceded today and expect to win football matches.”
