Olivier Giroud has heaped praise on Mesut Ozil following the playmaker’s impressive Arsenal debut at Sunderland on Saturday.

Ozil set up Giroud for the Gunners’ opener in a 3-1 win at the Stadium of Light as the Germany international made his first Arsenal appearance following his £42.5m transfer from Real Madrid.

And Giroud, who continued his fine run of scoring in all of Arsenal’s league games so far this season on Saturday, was gushing with praise for his new team-mate.

“Everything is easier with this player,” Giroud told Arsenal Player. “He always plays in the right way, nothing else.

“He has a fantastic, lovely first touch so it is really easy to find each other, especially for the third goal.

“We were really happy to win after a good first half. We missed a lot of chances to score and should have had two or three goals more. Their keeper did well.

“I feel really good on the pitch in my relationships, especially with our new player, Mesut. There are a lot of good feelings.”

Arsenal travel to Marseille for their opening Champions League group match on Wednesday, and Giroud is hoping the north Londoners can get off to a good start.

“I know Marseille very well, it is a big atmosphere there and an amazing crowd,” he said. “They really love football so it will be a big game.

“I am sure we will fight as we need a first win in the Champions League to start well. We need to be strong. Even though we have a lot of injuries, we have a lot of quality and we need to win this game.”
