Parlour, Kompany & more: Twitter reacts as Costa Rica stun Uruguay
Ray Parlour and Vincent Kompany both tweet their thoughts as Costa Rica are surprise 3-1 winners against Uruguay
Joel Campbell produced a starring performance as Costa Rica were surprise 3-1 winners against Uruguay in their Group D opener.
The 21-year-old, who is owned by Arsenal, cancelled out Edinson Cavani’s first-half penalty before Oscar Duarte guided a header into the Uruguay net in the 57th minute, with Marcos Urena sealing the win with six minutes remaining.
With England’s group blown wide open by the Central American’s win, there was unsurprisingly a lot of Twitter reaction from the current and former pros. Here is the best of the social media activity in chronological order.
Arsenal legend Ray Parlour (@RealRomfordPele) is liking the look of Gunners striker Campbell: “Campbell looks lively. Nearly scored a cracker in the 1st Half! #WorldCup2014”
Beligum and Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany (@VincentKompany) is relishing his country’s first game as he watches on: “URUvsCRC This World Cup is madness. Can’t wait to kick it off with Belgium. #Belgium #Brasil2014”
Republic of Ireland defender Sean St Ledger (@seanstledger12) is wondering whether Uruguay will turn to their talisman: “Suarez will he or won’t he come on!?!?!?!!”
Former Northern Ireland manager Jim Magilton (@magilton7) is staggered how poor Uruguay are without Suarez: “Amazing how one player can make such a difference to a team- Uruguay nowhere near the same team without Suarez! Need something from this game!”
Ex-Crystal Palace forward Mark Bright (@Mark__Bright) is looking at things from an English perspective: “So Uruguay are 2-1 down to Costa Rica they have one substitution left and don’t use Suarez who’s on the bench! He’s nowhere near fit.”
Former Dutch defender Mario Melchiot (@MarioMelchiot) believes Campbell is going to be a star this World Cup: “#CostaRica really played to #Campbell ‘s strengths. Wow, he’s making sure the whole world knows who he is. Great talent!”
Retired Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba (@fmuamba) is also quick to lavish praise on the Costa Rica striker: “J. Campbell MOM for me. His all-round performance has just been superb in this game. #CRC #WorldCup2014”
Swansea City midfielder Wayne Routledge (@WayneRoutledge) hopes England can seize the initiative: “Well done Costa Rica! Blew the group wide open! If that’s not motivation, I don’t know what is… It’s nearly that time!”
