Paul Merson is well known for not holding back when giving his take on the latest Premier League proceedings.

And the former Arsenal star has coined another gem of a catchphrase to describe Liverpool’s current form – by branding Jurgen Klopp’s men as a “snakes and ladders team”.

Liverpool head into their Premier League showdown with Manchester City in 10th place in the Premier League table and on the back of their surprise 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield before the international break.

And Merson used his own unique metaphor as he ran the rule over the Merseyside outfit’s current situation.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “Liverpool are a snakes and ladders team.

“Every time they do well, like they did against Chelsea, they hit a snake like they did against Crystal Palace, and go down again.

“It puts into perspective how hard a job it is going to be for Jurgen Klopp.

“They play Manchester City today and City are well ahead of them in all areas. That doesn’t mean Liverpool can’t beat them. But if they hit a snake could get well beaten.

“City are winning games without Sergio Aguero and David Silva and that is worrying for everyone else. You have to hold your hands up and say they’ve done well.”

Liverpool are winless in their last six Premier League games away to Manchester City, with their most recent win at the Etihad Stadium back in 2008.

Victory on Saturday would see Liverpool win back-to-back away games in the top flight for the first time since March.
