Fernandinho is expected to be out of action for “three or four weeks” with a muscular problem, Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has revealed.

The Brazilian midfielder missed Monday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea at Etihad Stadium as the Citizens slumped to their first home loss of the season in the Premier League.

And Pellegrini pointed to the absence of the midfielder, along with Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri, as one of the reasons for the defeat by Jose Mourinho’s men.

“Jack Rodwell is coming back from injury, [James] Milner’s just worked with us properly for the last day. I think that the only option I had was [Martin] Demichelis in that position,” Pellegrini said.

“Fernandinho has a muscle injury, we’ll see tomorrow how long he’ll be out for. I think it’ll be a matter of three or four weeks.”

The Manchester City boss continued: “Of course Fernandinho is an important player for us.

“Not only him, you have to add [Sergio] Aguero, [Samir] Nasri and Javi Garcia – James Milner was not 100 per cent so he couldn’t start, Alvaro Negredo wasn’t 100 per cent either.”

Manchester City next face Norwich in the Premier League on Saturday.
