Pepe Reina has heaped praise on Rafael Benítez ahead of the Spaniard’s return to the Anfield dugout with Chelsea on Sunday – but insists Liverpool are determined to spoil his day by sealing three points against the Blues.

Benítez led Liverpool to Champions League and FA Cup glory during his six seasons on Merseyside between 2004 and 2010 and is widely expected to receive a warm reception from the Anfield faithful this weekend.

But Reina, who Benítez brought to the club from Villarreal in 2005, says Brendan Rodgers’ men are out to make it an unhappy Anfield return for the former Valencia boss, whose side are chasing Champions League qualification.

“Everybody knows what a great manager Rafa is,” Reina told Liverpool’s website. “He’s showing it now at Chelsea and he showed it in the past here at Liverpool.

“The appreciation for Rafa will be there, but there are three points and a big opponent – we have to aim for those three points.

“It’s a football game; he will be looking for the same thing, three points on Sunday for them is massive.

“They are in the middle of a fight for those top four places. For us, we have to finish the season well and try to be as consistent as possible.”
