Per Mertesacker has urged Arsenal to continue their recent form ahead of the FA Cup final on Saturday.

The Gunners, who beat the Red Devils in the cup final in 2005, can end their nine-year wait to win a trophy at Wembley as the north London side face Hull City in the FA Cup showpiece.

Arsene Wenger’s men sealed fourth place and Champions League football next season after a 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion on the penultimate weekend of the Premier League season.

And Germany international Mertesacker, who moved to the north London club from Werder Bremen in 2011, wants the Gunners to continue their five-game winning streak.

“Especially in my first season they always covered me and always backed me up and gave me that bit of confidence you need as a player.

“(Winning the cup) would mean a lot, that would be a big step for our team,” Mertesacker told Arsenal’s website.

“We went through a lot of difficulties. We were top of the league, then we dropped points and then came back to fourth position. We want to keep our run now.

“We won five consecutive games, we want to continue with that (on) Saturday. That is really important. It looks like we are back on track. We have to keep our focus.”
