Paul Pogba needs to show a great consistency at Manchester United throughout the 2019-20 Premier League season, says Phil Neville.

The Red Devils made the perfect start to the new campaign with a resounding 4-0 victory over their bitter rivals Chelsea FC at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Pogba made two assists as goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Daniel James helped to seal a resounding victory over Chelsea FC.

The Manchester United record signing acquitted himself well in the middle of the park to cast aside speculation surrounding his future.

Chelsea FC didn’t start their holding midfielder N’Golo Kante due to fitness concerns as Mason Mount filled the void left by the World Cup winner.

Pogba will encounter greater tests as the Premier League season progresses but the French star made a solid start.

Former Manchester United defender Neville believes Pogba will be a huge part of any success that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side achieve this season.

“Pogba will play a huge part in any success they have this season – people keep saying United should sell him but for me it is hard to imagine this United side without him in it,” Neville told BBC Sport.

“He would leave a hole the size of the Channel Tunnel if he left, because I do not see another midfielder in the Premier League that can play the pass he did for United’s third goal, when he set up Marcus Rashford.

“That was not the only occasion he produced a ball of that kind of unbelievable quality, but we have always known he has got that ability.

“What I want to see now from Paul now is consistency with the level of his performances over an entire season, not just a handful of games.

“I also want him to become the leader of this team by setting the example on the pitch and in the dressing room.

“If he can do that, he can become a United great, one of the legends of the club. That is the challenge for him.”

Pogba’s future has been a source of relentless speculation this summer.

Even though the Premier League’s transfer window has closed, Pogba could still move to a foreign club such as Juventus or Real Madrid.

The Red Devils haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013.

Their last trophy was the Europa League title in the 2016-17 season.
