Phil Thompson is backing Sadio Mane to fire Liverpool FC to a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday evening.

The Senegal international was criticised for a wasteful performance in Liverpool FC’s 1-0 win against Serie A giants Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Mane missed three clear cut chances in their final group-stage fixture to fail to double the home side’s lead after Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock in the first half.

The African forward, who was linked with a move to Manchester United before his £30m switch to Liverpool FC in the 2016 summer transfer window, has scored six goals in 14 games in the English top flight this term.

Mane has established himself as a key member of Jurgen Klopp’s side after establishing an exciting partnership with Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in the Liverpool FC attack.

Former Liverpool FC defender Thompson is backing Mane to score both of the Reds’ goals in a 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday evening.

“I don’t think Jose Mourinho will park the full double decker, it’ll just be the single decker this time as he’ll have them organised and well-drilled to make sure they stay in the game,” Thompson told Sky Sports.

“He’ll have his workers in the team like Lingard and Rashford who understand the running they have to do.”

Thompson added: “Jose’s done it on a number of occasions with Chelsea and United and he knows it can work. I remember when I was working with Gerard Houllier at Liverpool and we found a way of playing against United, so we stuck with it at home and away and we had great success.

“I think Mata will play as well as he always seems to do well against Liverpool. Klopp’s got some defensive problems but Lovren’s back and James Milner can play well at right-back so I wouldn’t be too worried, but Trent (Alexander-Arnold) won’t want to miss this game so a couple of paracetamol and we could see him out there.

“But it should all be about Liverpool and I can see them winning well.”

Liverpool FC have failed to beat Manchester United in their last eight games in the Premier League.

Klopp is still waiting to secure a league win against the Red Devils since taking over the reins from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015.

However, the Merseyside outfit were 2-0 winners against Manchester United at Anfield in the Europa League in 2016.
