Phil Thompson: Why I can’t name ‘incredible’ Liverpool FC star as player of the season
The Liverpool FC legend admits Kevin De Bruyne pips Mohamed Salah in his Premier League player of the season rankings

Phil Thompson has conceded that Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne edges Liverpool FC signing Mohamed Salah in the running for the Premier League player of the season.
The Egypt international moved to the Anfield outfit in a £39m deal from Serie A side AS Roma in the summer transfer window.
Salah’s switch to Liverpool FC was met with some skepticism given his disappointing six-month spell at Chelsea in 2014 alongside De Bruyne.
However, the 25-year-old attacker has scored an incredible 14 goals in 18 games in the Premier League to lead the goal-scoring charts.
The reigning African player of the year has also netted six times in the Champions League to help Liverpool FC set up a last-16 meeting with FC Porto.
De Bruyne, on the other hand, has contributed six goals and eight assists to help Manchester City build an impressive 11 point lead at the top of the table.
The Belgium international has also scored against Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur to thrive in Manchester City’s biggest Premier League games.
Former Liverpool FC captain Thompson has admitted that De Bruyne deserves to be recognised as the player of the season ahead of Salah – so far.
“Mohamed Salah has been absolutely incredible but Kevin De Bruyne has probably been the best player the Premier League so far this season,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
Liverpool FC lost 5-0 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium back in September.
