Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil enjoyed watching George Groves become European super-middleweight champion after Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

Ozil, 25, scored his first Premier League goal of the season before teeing up Danny Welbeck to double the Gunners’s lead at Villa Park, before Aly Cissokho’s own goal sealed three points for the north London side.

The World Cup winner has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks after a string of disappointing performances, so it is no surprise that the £42.5m club-record signing decided to enjoy himself on Saturday.

Ozil was joined by Arsenal team-mate and compatriot Lukas Podolski as the German pair watched Groves outpoint France’s Christopher Rebrasse to win the European super-middleweight title.

“Congratulation #george groves#champ#mesutözil #mesutozil,” Ozil posted on Instagram.

The Arsenal star added: “It was a great fight.”

Groves, who is a big Chelsea supporter, won the European title on a points decision, as two judges scored the fight 118-110, with another making it 117-111.

Podolski added: “Great fight at Wembley congrats to #georgegroves !! Good night all!! #boxing #wembley #Poldi #aha #Özil”
