Piers Morgan has criticised Arsenal for extending Arsene Wenger’s contract for another two seasons.

The Gunners boss put pen to paper on a new deal to secure his future at the Emirates Stadium until 2019.

Wenger endured a difficult season at the north London club after Arsenal finished in fifth spot in the Premier League table and a point behind fourth-placed Liverpool.

The Gunners lost 10-2 on aggregate to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 back in March to fall short for another season in Europe.

Arsenal ended the season on a positive note after Wenger’s side were 2-1 winners against Premier League champions Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04, while Wenger has never lifted the Champions League crown despite losing in the final in 2006.

Outspoken Arsenal shareholder Morgan was critical of the north London club for rewarding Wenger with a new deal despite their lack of success over the past 13 years.

Morgan wrote on his Twitter page:

“If true, a scandalous reward for 13 years of Premier League and 20 years of Champions League failure. Arsene Wenger was the greatest manager I’ve ever seen at Arsenal.

“Now he’s the butt of rival fan jokes yet signs a new £20m deal. Pathetic. To all Arsenal fans who’ve enabled Wenger’s new deal with your simpering acceptance of mediocrity… don’t blame me for next two years of failure.

“The lack of ambition in so many Arsenal fans is pathetic. Where’s your ruthless winning desire? Why are you so utterly spineless?”
