With the season drawing to a close, everything is still up for grabs. The destination of the title is far from clear. Manchester United hold a slender one point advantage over bitter Northern rivals Liverpool, with Chelsea snapping at the Merseysiders’ heels a further three points behind.

With Manchester United and Liverpool yet to play Arsenal, the Gunners may yet stun everyone if the can produce performances like yesterday against a stubborn Wigan side. Aston Villa have fallen off the pace and have surrendered the fourth spot in the league to Arsenal and now look set to compete for a Europa Cup spot.

Everton secured a crucial point on Sunday against the Villans with a thrilling 3-3 draw. Should a third Europa Cup spot become available, depending on the winner of the FA Cup, West Ham, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur  are all well placed to have a chance of a European campaign next year.

Further down the table, there are arguably 6-8 teams still involved in a relegation battle. West Brom are almost certain to be relegated at this stage. Middlesbrough managed what could prove to be a vital win against Hull City on Saturday, and will that the ‘Great Escape’ commences.

The appointment of Toon legend Alan Shearer has certainly caused a media whirl. It would be a fantastic story if the ever popular Shearer can guide Newcastle out of the drop zone and into safety. Crucial games with Liverpool and Manchester United await!

Sunderland lacked any creative spark against United on Saturday and might yet end up in the Championship next year. Blackburn Rovers lacked any threat up front against Liverpool, and ‘Big Sam’ has only one fit striker available to him, hence mammoth centre back Chris Samba has been drafted in as a makeshift centre forward.

Hull City’s season has well and truly imploded. Phil Brown’s side were soaring high in the league in early December. They have managed a mere 10 points since and could also plummet down a divison come May.

Above them Portsmouth and Stoke City need two more vital victories to all but seal their Premiership status for next season.

So with so much to play for, it makes for an exciting final six games. It’s difficult to call the outcomes and with so many ‘six-pointers’ to be played the layout of the table could be set to change many times.

It certainly makes the Premiership the most exciting league in the world.
