Never mind those of the dreaded goalless variety, witnessing a draw in the Premier League this season is about as unheard of as Portsmouth finding the back of the net.

Premier League action has been coming thick and fast but out of the 64 games that have taken place up and down the country, only four have ended in draws.

There were none after Saturday’s batch of fixtures and as the season enters its seventh week, it appears that the solitary Premier League point is well and truly out of fashion.

Pundits have put the demise of the draw down to a whole host of factors including bad defending and increased added time, but perhaps the most credible is that teams are more often approaching games with attacking mentalities rather than playing for that single point.

Premier League goalkeepers have also found themselves picking the ball out of the net more frequently so far this season. The 64 games have seen a total of 185 goals averaging at a healthy 2.96 per game.

Two of the four draws this season have been goalless and the total number represents just over 6 per cent of all results. To put this into perspective, around a quarter of all of last season’s results were draws at just over 25 per cent.

The scene around Europe this season is much more regular. In Spain’s La Liga 15 per cent of results were draws and 22 per cent in Italy’s Serie A.

So, as Premier League parity becomes an increasingly rare occurrence, the statistics only reflect positively on the English top-flight with more goals and more excitement contributing to an intriguing season.
