PSG 2 Barcelona 2: David Beckham insists the French side were worthy of their draw after they twice came from behind
David Beckham insisted Paris Saint-Germain were worthy of their draw with Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Lionel Messi fired home just before the break to put the visitors 1-0 up but was substituted at half-time with an apparent hamstring strain.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic then returned to haunt his former club when he equalised 11 minutes from time, but Xavi’s 89th-minute penalty appeared to have wrapped up the win for the La Liga leaders.
However, Blaise Matuidi had the final say when his low shot crept past Victor Valdes to leave the Champions League quarter-final tie level ahead of the return leg at Camp Nou next week.
“We deserved the draw tonight,” Beckham, who started the game, told ITV1. “They had a lot of possession, they’ve got an amazing team that keep the ball very well.
“In the first half we had a few very good chances and if we’d have put one of those away it might have been different. But then they got their goal and it was an uphill battle.”
Looking ahead to the return leg at Camp Nou next week, when Messi could possibly be sidelined, Beckham added: “It’s going to be difficult but there’s no reason why we can’t go there and get a result.
“I hope [Messi] is not injured. We all hope he’s fit and ready to go for any game that’s coming up. We wish him well.”
