Pundit: Liverpool star looks a nervous wreck compared to Hugo Lloris
Garth Crooks describes Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet as a "nervous wreck"
Garth Crooks claimed that Hugo Lloris’ performance only served to highlight Simon Mignolet’s poor form in the Liverpool goal.
The Tottenham shot stopper produced an amazing save to deny Philippe Coutinho during Liverpool’s 4-1 loss to Spurs at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
Mignolet was sluggish coming off his line to prevent Harry Kane’s opening goal before the Belgian goalkeeper made a poor attempt to deny Dele Alli.
The 28-year-old has already conceded 16 goals in nine games in the Premier League this season but Klopp continues to stick with Mignolet despite having Loris Karius and Danny Ward in reserve.
However, Crooks believes Liverpool’s poor defending has contributed to Mignolet’s disastrous performances in goal over the past month or so.
“What a contrast at the other end of the pitch,” Crooks told BBC Sport.
“Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet looks like a nervous wreck in comparison to Lloris – hardly surprising given that he plays behind the Liverpool back four every week.
“Mignolet is not as bad as some people make out but he has been made to look much worse due to an abject defence. Every goalkeeper needs some protection. At Liverpool he gets none.”
Liverpool signed Mignolet in a £9m deal from Sunderland in the 2013 summer transfer window to replace Spain international Pepe Reina.
The Merseyside outfit signed four players in the summer transfer window but Liverpool didn’t recruit a new shot stopper.
Klopp signed Karius in a £4.7m deal from Mainz in 2016 but the German goalkeeper has proven just as unreliable in the Liverpool goal.
The Reds will welcome promoted side Huddersfield Town at Anfield in the Premier League game next weekend.
