Alan Pardew admitted it was a “big relief” to see his 10-man Newcastle United side secure their Premier League status with victory at Queens Park Rangers.

Loic Remy’s 11th-minute penalty put Harry Redknapp’s men ahead but Hatem Ben Arfa levelled from the spot seven minutes later.

Yoan Gouffran then fired Pardew’s men into the lead before half-time at Loftus Road with a long-range effort, before Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot was sent off for handling outside the area.

But the visitors clung on to secure a win which guarantees their top-flight survival – and Pardew was thrilled with the result.

“It is a big relief because this is a massive club,” Pardew, whose side are 13th in the table, told BBC Sport.

“We got the win we needed. The injuries we have suffered this year have been horrendous. This type of year usually ends up in relegation.

“It was a nervous display from us, we really needed that first goal. We have made mistakes but we will make sure that we protect ourselves. The Premier League is so unforgiving.”
