QPR’s Harry Redknapp plays down fears over Bobby Zamora ankle injury

Harry Redknapp has played down fears over Bobby Zamora’s “nasty” ankle injury, despite the striker being ruled out of Queens Park Rangers’ trip to Southampton.

The England international has endured a frustrating campaign at the Hoops after completing a free transfer to Loftus Road from west London neighbours Fulham in January 2012.

The 32-year-old has scored four goals in nine Premier League starts this term after missing most of November, December and January due to a hip injury which required surgery.

With the club’s record signing Loic Remy edging towards match fitness, Redknapp is desperate to pair the former Marseille frontman alongside Zamora to help fire QPR to safety.

The former Tottenham forward picked up an ankle injury in a 2-0 loss to Manchester United last weekend – and although he will not be available for the trip to St Mary’s, he should feature in the run-in.

“Bobby isn’t going to be fit. He did his ankle last week,” said Redknapp.

“It’s just been amazing. We bring Remy in and we can’t get Bobby fit. We get Bobby fit and Remy is injured. That’s how it goes.”

He later added: “No, he shouldn’t be [out for the season].

“He got a nasty ankle injury [against Manchester United] and I wanted him to come off but he wouldn’t.

“He did it about a minute before half-time but he wanted to play on. I felt he was our one chance of getting a result last week. I looked at Bobby and thought if I can get Remy on with him..

“I said, ‘Look Bob don’t set yourself back’, but he said no because he wanted to play. He’s travelling with us to Southampton because he wants to be part of the team. He’s a good lad.”
