Harry Redknapp has admitted he regrets not “trying harder” to sign West Bromwich Albion striker Peter Odemwingie in the January transfer window.

The Hoops edged closer to relegation from the Premier League after a 2-0 loss to Stoke City at Loftus Road on Saturday, leaving them 10 points from safety with four games remaining.

Redknapp has regularly bemoaned the persistent injuries which his strikers Loic Remy and Bobby Zamora have suffered in the second half of the season before the latter got a three-game ban for a tackle on Jordi Gomez.

The 66-year-old came close to signing want-away Baggies forward Odemwingie earlier this year, but QPR and West Brom failed to agree a deal despite the striker’s desperate attempts to force a move.

And Redknapp conceded QPR might not be in 19th position and so far adrift of safety if the west London side had added the Nigerian to their ranks.

“I would not have changed an awful lot [this season], really,” Redknapp told ESPN. “I’d have probably tried harder to get the boy from West Brom, Odemwingie.

“He might have really given us something up there with Bobby Zamora not being 100 per cent fit. He might have scored four or five goals that make the difference.

“He did no different to what about 50 other footballers did on the same day. He made one big mistake. He was too honest, he turned up at the football club, he was silly.”
