Mark Hughes insists there is a “real belief” among his Queens Park Rangers squad despite extending their winless streak to six games in the Premier League.

The Hoops suffered a 2-1 loss to West Ham United on Monday, leaving Hughes’ side in 20th place ahead of a daunting trip to high-flying West Bromwich Albion this weekend.

Despite disappointing results, the QPR manager has been encouraged by his side’s recent performances and the Welshman is confident their first victory of the season is imminent.

“At the moment we’re finding it difficult to get results in line with our performances. We haven’t picked up as many points as we’d have hoped,” said Hughes.

“But there’s real belief in what we’re doing. Once we get more games under our belts, we’ll be fine.”

Jose Bosingwa, Anton Ferdinand, Armand Traore and Fábio were all absent for QPR’s defeat by the Hammers, with Hughes forced to field four centre-halves.

The 48-year-old admitted the Hoops’ injury problems have restricted his plans this season, but Hughes is confident the results will improve once QPR have a settled defence.

“Injuries have meant that I haven’t been able to select the side that I want,” he added.

“We’ve been encouraged by what we’ve produced in a number of games and we know we’re capable of winning Premier League matches.

“We all understand that we’re judged on results – but we knew it was a difficult start to the season given the fixtures we had. The opening day [defeat against Swansea] put us on the back foot.”

Hughes added: “If you look at the teams that do well and have a good start to the season, they have settled sides and defences. We haven’t had that – but it’ll come.”
