QPR boss Mark Hughes: Swansea thrashing ‘could be a blessing’

QPR manager Mark Hughes believes his side's 5-0 loss to Swansea City on Saturday could be "the making" of the Hoops this season

Mark Hughes believes Queens Park Rangers’ 5-0 humiliation at the hands of Swansea City in their opening Premier League fixture could prove to be a blessing in disguise.

The 48-year-old has been ambitious in his signings this summer as the Welshman attempts to mould QPR into an established top-flight club, capturing Manchester United’s Park Ji-Sung, and snapping up highly-rated Blackburn Rovers forward Junior Hoilett.

Samba Diakite, who impressed on a six-month loan stint at QPR last season, was signed on a permanent deal in June, while Robert Green, Andy Johnson and Ryan Nelsen have all arrived on free transfers.

Hughes also secured Fabio da Silva on a season-long loan from the Red Devils, but despite the numerous reinforcements, the Hoops made the worst possible start to the new campaign against Michael Laudrup’s side on Saturday.

Michu put the Swans ahead after eight minutes, before doubling the visitors lead in the second half. The Spaniard’s efforts were then matched by Nathan Dyer, who netted a quick-fire brace, leaving Scott Sinclair to cap a memorable afternoon for the Welsh outfit.

“A number of individuals did OK but the team performance was nowhere near where it needed to be,” Hughes said. “You can make all the excuses you want, but it doesn’t wash with me.

“It’s unacceptable and highlights there are players who are not where they need to be.

“We chased the game when we didn’t have to. We became ragged and made bad decisions.

He added: “It might be the making of us to be honest.

“All in all it is a poor start to the season but it could be a blessing, get it out of the way, get it out of the system, and come back.”
