QPR transfers: Harry Redknapp insists England goalkeeper Rob Green is part of his plans despite being second-choice
Harry Redknapp insists Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Rob Green is part of his plans despite competition from Brazil international Júlio Cesar.
The England international was snapped up on a free transfer by former R’s manager Mark Hughes during the summer, with Paddy Kenny moving to Leeds United.
Green was expected to be QPR’s undisputed number one, but Hughes also swooped for five-time Serie A champion Cesar before the close of the transfer window.
The 33-year-old replaced Green after a 5-0 loss to Swansea in QPR’s first game of the season, and the former West Ham man was left benched for the next 13 league fixtures.
However, Cesar picked up a groin injury in Redknapp’s first game in charge at Sunderland, and Green was recalled for the Hoops’ stalemates against Aston Villa and Wigan Athletic.
“Yes, he [Green] is in my plans,” Rednapp told the Times. “I don’t want to lose Rob Green – he’s a top goalkeeper.
“I haven’t discussed [his happiness at the club] with him. We need players. We don’t want to be selling them at the moment.
“The ones that I want to keep, we’ve got to keep. We’re looking to get better not worse. You need two top goalkeepers and we have that here.”
