Ryan Nelsen has agreed to take charge of Toronto but should be available for Queens Park Rangers’ clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, the west London outfit have confirmed.

It emerged on Tuesday morning that the New Zealand international could be on the verge of embarking on a managerial career with the Major League Soccer outfit.

The 35-year-old has held together QPR’s struggling defence this season, with the Hoops struggling to field a settled back four due to injuries and suspensions.

Nelsen signed a one-year deal with the R’s in the summer after joining on a free transfer from Spurs, but the centre-half is now set to become Toronto’s new boss.

A statement on QPR’s website read: “Ryan Nelsen has agreed a deal to take charge of MLS side FC Toronto.

“The New Zealand defender – who joined Rangers on a free transfer in the summer – was approached about pursuing a coaching role with the Canadian club, which he has now accepted.

“Nelsen is under contract with QPR until June 30th 2013, however, he has requested to enter dialogue with QPR boss Harry Redknapp to discuss when he will join up with his new club.

“In the meantime, Nelsen will be available for the R’s Barclays Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.”

Nelsen has made 195 Premier League appearances for Blackburn Rovers, Tottenham Hotspur and QPR after being signed by former Rovers boss Mark Hughes from MLS side DC United in 2004.
