Nigel Adkins insists Reading will regroup in a bid to secure an immediate Premier League return after a goalless draw with Queens Park Rangers condemned both sides to the Championship.

QPR had the best chance of the opening 60 minutes when Stephane Mbia released Jay Bothroyd but the striker’s effort drifted narrowly wide of Alex McCarthy’s post.

Reading finally conjured an effort on Rob Green’s goal as Jobi McAnuff fired in a long-range shot before QPR midfielder Esteban Granero saw his free-kick hit the post.

The Royals and QPR, who are both on 25 points, drop down to the Championship and Adkins urged his players to remember the feeling of being relegated.

“I have told the players to bottle up the feeling as it is never nice to get relegated, and make sure they never feel that way again,” Adkins told BBC Sport.

“We must now build for the future and learn the lessons well from this season. We have to regroup and put ourselves in a position to challenge to get back into the Premier League.

“For any new promoted team, it is a challenge to stay up. The Premier League is a ruthless division.”
