Reading transfers: Guthrie still has a future at the club – McDermott
Reading transfers: Brian McDermott says Danny Guthrie will be given a chance to prove himself after refusing to play on Tuesday

Brian McDermott has insisted Danny Guthrie still has a future at Reading despite refusing to play in their 3-0 loss to Sunderland on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old claimed his “head wasn’t in the right place” to feature for the Royals in a must-win fixture at the Stadium of Light, resulting in a heavy fine.
Guthrie has made just six appearances for Reading after completing a free transfer to the newly-promoted side from Newcastle in the summer.
Despite the incident, McDermott hinted Guthrie would be given a chance to turn around his career at the Madejski Stadium ahead of the January transfer window.
“Let’s see where we are in a couple of days’ time and go from there. I need to have a conversation with him and be fair to him,” McDermott said.
“I don’t think anything in football is untenable, there’s always a way back.
“The way back for him is to train to the best of his ability, get himself in the squad, play
well and win games. Then the fans can forgive an awful lot.
“I’m always one to see the positives, but I can understand the fans’ frustration in this.
“I have got to speak to him. We haven’t had a conversation yet.”
