Real Madrid 2 Borussia Dortmund 0: We could have done it – Mourinho
Real Madrid 2 Borussia Dortmund 0: Jose Mourinho feels Real Madrid had the chances to reach final after 4-3 aggregate loss
Jose Mourinho felt Real Madrid had the chances to book their place in the Champions League final after the La Liga side’s late show was not enough to beat Borussia Dortmund.
Trailing 4-1 from last weekend’s first leg, Mourinho’s men finally made the breakthrough in the Spanish capital in the 82nd minute when substitute Karim Benzema tapped home from close range.
Sergio Ramos then made it 2-0 on the night two minutes from time, but Dortmund held firm to secure their place in next month’s final at Wembley with a 4-3 aggregate success.
“In football you win or you lose,” said Mourinho. “I think we could have won. They had a couple of big chances but that was a consequence of the way we were playing late on where we risked everything.
“Today we were a team with character and desire and we could have done it.
“I don’t forget the first match, we were very bad and we were punished because of the result of the first leg.”
Madrid defender Ramos admits Los Blancos were made to pay for a poor showing in last week’s first leg.
“It’s a shame,” he said. “Sometimes you lose, that is football. In Dortmund we should have played the way we did tonight.
“We feel for the fans. It’s a shame to have been so close but the missed chances in the first half were costly.”
Dortmund will play either Bayern Munich or Barcelona in next month’s final in London.
