Rene Meulensteen: I urged Sir Alex Ferguson to stay away from Man United
Fulham manager Rene Meulensteen reveals that he told Sir Alex Ferguson to stay away from Manchester United games
Rene Meulensteen has revealed that he advised Sir Alex Ferguson to stay away from Manchester United games “for a year” following his retirement.
The Scot failed to heed his former assistant’s advice, having been regularly spotted at a host of Red Devils matches at Old Trafford as well as away games this season.
It’s not surprising because if that is what you have been doing all your life, it becomes very hard to say goodbye to it
Inevitably, Ferguson’s presence in the stands has led to claims that the Scot is putting his successor David Moyes under more pressure to succeed, with United currently seventh.
And Meulensteen, who worked under Ferguson for six seasons, lifed the lid on a conversation that he had with the 71-year-old following his retirement in May.
“I remember saying after he retired “you should stay away for a year and see how it goes… leave it alone”. But he wasn’t able to do that,” Meulensteen is quoted as saying by Daily Mail.
However, the Dutch coach, who replaced Martin Jol at Fulham earlier this season, can understand why Ferguson finds it difficult to stay away after his 26-year reign at the 20-time English champions.
“It’s not surprising because if that is what you have been doing all your life, it becomes very hard to say goodbye to it,” Meulensteen added.
