Rio 2016 Olympics: Jo Konta through as GB mixed doubles pairings confirmed

Johanna Konta is through to the third round of the women’s singles at the Rio 2016 Olympics – but Heather Watson and Kyle Edmund are out.

Konta, the world No13, beat France’s Caroline Garcia 6-2 6-3, as Watson was beaten by Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3 1-6 6-3.

Kyle Edmund lost in men’s singles after a 6-4 7-5 defeat by Japan’s Taro Daniel in Brazil.

“I’m grateful to be here and I get to say I’m an Olympian,” said Konta, who will play Russian eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in the last 16.

“I’m here to compete and I’m really enjoying being part of the whole thing.”

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Jamie Murray and Jo Konta, and Andy Murray and Heather Watson, will link up for the mixed doubles event in Rio.

“We are excited nominate two very strong teams for the mixed doubles event here in Rio,” said Team GB’s tennis team leader Iain Bates said.

“The ranking cut off for the event is very high with some of the best players in the world competing here and we expect one team to make the cut.

“Jamie and Johanna will combine excellently to form an extremely competitive doubles team. Johanna is in the form of her career right now and Jamie’s doubles record, at world number one and Grand Slam winner, speaks for itself.

“The singles event is very much Andy’s focus in Rio, however given the opportunity he is keen to play the event, and in Heather we have a world class mixed doubles player and reigning Wimbledon champion in the event.”
