Wayne Rooney inspired Manchester United to a comeback at the KC Stadium after the Red Devils were 3-2 winners against Hull City.

Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney overturned Hull’s 13th-minute two-goal lead before Tigers centre-half James Chester headed past his own goalkeeper to hand three points to the visitors.

Here is the best of the Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to United’s Boxing Day comeback.

Queens Park Rangers Joey Barton (‏@Joey7Barton) is happy to see long-term absentee Darren Fletcher starting at Hull: “Good to see Darren Fletcher back in the starting line up for Man United. He’s had a horrible run with illness.”

England rugby star Ugo Monye ‏(@ugomonye) can’t believe the start at the KC Stadium: “United!!!”

Former Red Devils youth graduate Danny Higginbotham ‏(@Higginbotham05) still reckons United will come from behind: “Great game at Hull. I fancy United to win 4-2.”

Former Middlesbrough man Jan Aage Fjortoft (‏@JanAageFjortoft) gives his thoughts on the game: “Good old fashioned boxing day games. Good old fashioned goal from an English centrehalf (Smalling) […] Just pure class from @WayneRooney . Brilliant tecnique, brilliant balance, brilliant goal. Brilliant player. #MUFC”

England legend Gary Lineker ‏(@GaryLineker) hopes the rest of the Boxing Day clashes are as exciting: “If every game has this goal-scoring rate, we’ll have 120 goals on #MOTD tonight.”

More from Barton (‏@Joey7Barton): “Loads of coupons have just rose from the dead with that Rooney strike. People in bins all over the country. #footycouponheaven”

Norwich defender Elliott Bennett ‏(@Ebenno88) reckons United are running of the mince pies: “Man United were just running off a few mince pies. Heartbreaking for Hull being 2-0 up so early and now pegged back.”

Ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris ‏(@morriskid) isn’t impressed by Rooney’s dive: “Rooney should be booked there #Dive”

United defender Rio Ferdinand (‏@rioferdy5) helps the media come up with their headline for the match: “Fightback season has started!! Let’s go boys! The Tigers showed their teeth but we clawed it back! No charge for that headline journos!”

Finally, ex-Red Devils striker Michael Owen ‏(@themichaelowen)tips United to challenge: Another United win. Now five points behind. As I said in my blog 2 weeks ago, the title contenders will all be looking over their shoulders.”
