Robbie Keane made his debut at Rugby Park last night but was unable to get his Celtic career off to a flying start as the Glasgow club slumped to a surprising 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock.

Keane, who is reported to be earning £68,000-a-week in Scotland, was unable to manufacture a goal for his new club despite playing 90 minutes.

Instead it was Aberdeen loanee Chris Maguire who scored the only goal of the match and secured Kilmarnock’s first win over Celtic in nine years.

As the final whistle blew, ironic chants of “Keano Keano” rang around the stadium. The former Liverpool striker had opportunities but was denied on several occasions by some superb shot stopping by Cammy Bell.

The result leaves Rangers ten points clear at the summit of the SPL.

Speaking after the match Tony Mobwray said: “It’s not the result we wanted. We needed to hit the ground running with the new signings, but it didn’t quite happen tonight.”

He added: “We didn’t put the ball in the net. We had enough of the ball in their final third, but we didn’t put the ball way and they defended really well.”

The Celtic boss was also complimentary about Keane’s performance. “I thought Robbie played well,” he remarked. “He brings a different dimension to the team. Tonight he took up positions that other players would not do.”
