Robin van Persie predicts outcome of Ajax v Tottenham
Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie believes Tottenham will struggle without Harry Kane
Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie is backing Ajax to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League semi-finals.
The north London side booked their place in the last four of the competition for the first time in their history thank to a dramatic aggregate victory over Manchester City earlier this month.
Spurs were 1-0 winners against Pep Guardiola’s side at their new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before their 4-3 loss to Manchester City at The Etihad was sufficient to send them through on away goals.
Tottenham’s reward for their heroics against the defending Premier League champions is a last-four meeting with Eredivisie side Ajax.
The Dutch club have already landed some huge scalps in the Champions League this season, having beaten Real Madrid and Juventus over two legs in the round of 16 and quarter-final stage.
Tottenham have won their only two previous meetings in European competition in 1981.
Ex-Arsenal striker Van Persie is confident that Ajax will ease past Tottenham to reach their first Champions League final since 1995 in the absence of injured Harry Kane.
‘I did not see Ajax against Juventus because I was watching [Dutch comedian] Najib Amhali. I saw Manchester City against Tottenham though and that was better than a great film,” Van Persie told Algemeen Dagblad, as quoted by Metro.
“I think Ajax are favourites in the semi-final because Tottenham play without Harry Kane.”
Tottenham have a number of former Ajax players in their current squad, including Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen.
Davison Sanchez played for Ajax as recently as the 2016-17 season, while Denmark international Christian Eriksen earned a glowing reputation at the Eredivisie outfit.
