Brendan Rodgers has hinted that Mamadou Sakho could be in line for a return from injury when Liverpool make the trip to Southampton on Saturday.

The Reds centre-half hasn’t featured for the Merseyside outfit since picking up a hamstring injury in a 2-1 loss to Chelsea in late December.

But Rodgers revealed Sakho made a return to first-team training this week and the France international will undergo a late fitness test ahead of the St Mary’s clash.

“We’ve obviously had a couple of players return to training. Young Sakho has trained this week, which has been great. We’ll see if it’s too early for him this weekend,” Rodgers told his pre-match media conference.

Rodgers added that Brazilian Lucas Levia is also training with his Liverpool team-mates but won’t be ready to play any part against the Saints.

“Lucas Leiva rejoined the group today, which was great,” said the Northern Irishman.

The Liverpool boss confirmed that there are no new injury casualties aside from long-term absentee Jose Enrique.

He continued: “Jose Enrique is still out, but apart from that we don’t have any major injuries now.”

Rodgers went on to give further insight into the Spanish defender’s current rehabilitation from a knee injury, with the 28-year-old sidelined since November.

“It has just been ongoing,” Rodgers said. “He has obviously got the issue with his knee; he has come back after a good spell in America.

“He is rehabilitating well here. There’s no timeline on it. I trust the medical team here, they are very good, and they’ll advise me when he’s nearly fit.”
