Brendan Rodgers says Luis Suárez is “chomping at the bit” to make his return to action after the Liverpool striker completed his 10-game ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic.

The 26-year-old served the final game of his suspension for the South American’s latest indiscretion as the Reds suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

Suárez, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, netted twice in Uruguay’s recent World Cup qualifier against Peru but has not featured for the Reds since the Chelsea draw in April.

Liverpool face Manchester United in the League Cup third round on Wednesday night, and Rodgers hinted the Reds talisman could feature at Old Trafford.

“It has been a really difficult time for him not playing games,” Rodgers said.

“How he has prepared himself over the last number of weeks has been fantastic.

“He’s really chomping at the bit to help the team. Everyone knows the depth of his quality and his attitude. Once he gets back on the field again he will show what he has shown since he’s been here.”

Suárez has been no stranger to controversy since moving to the Reds from Ajax, receiving an eight-game ban for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrick Evra in a 1-1 draw in October 2011.

When asked whether the South American had learnt his lessons from the Ivanovic incident, Rodgers replied: “We will see, we will see.”
