Roy Hodgson has described Frank Lampard as a “very important” part of the England side after the veteran midfielder was included in the 23-man squad for this summer’s World Cup.

The 35-year-old Chelsea star, who has 103 caps, was included in what is otherwise a relatively youthful Three Lions squad set to travel to Brazil for next month’s tournament.

Hodgson is a keen admirer of the midfielder’s leadership qualities and believes his experience will be a vital asset during the course of the tournament.

“He is a very important part of our set-up still,” said Hodgson.

“You can’t compare players in terms of age but in terms of position and what they bring to the team.

“Frank has been the captain of the team during my two years and vice captain to Steven Gerrard.

“He still plays a very important role in his club side and his leadership qualities and ability as a player means he fully justifies his position.”

Lampard scored six goals and made three assists in 26 Premier League appearances for Chelsea this season.
