One of the most sought-after players in this transfer window, Ruud van Nistelrooy has finally decided to join German club Hamburg.

The Dutch striker is believed to have signed an 18-month deal with the Bundesliga club.

In recent months the former Manchester United striker had been linked to a return to the England with a host of English clubs being strongly linked with the striker who has not featured for Real Madrid this season.

Liverpool were thought to have been interested but the player’s massive wages were enough to deter the club. Evidently it also proved a deterrent for other suitors from England.

Van Nistelrooy was looking to secure a contract worth in the region of £100,000-per-week. Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United were both understood to have discussed the possibility of signing the Dutch international but eventually opted for other options.

Redknapp revealed: “We don’t pay that type of wage; it would break our wage structure by an awful long way. The chairman runs a good business and wouldn’t pay that sort of money.”

The 33-year-old striker is keen to secure a place in the Holland squad for the imminent World Cup in South Africa this summer and the lack of opportunities at the Bernabeu forced the striker to look elsewhere.

However the striker is content with his move to the Bundesliga.

“I am really happy that it has worked out. I had great talks with both [Hamburg president] Bernd Hoffmann and Bruno Labbadia and had a very positive impression from the very beginning.”
