Ruud van Nistelrooy believes Wayne Rooney should leave Manchester United if the striker isn’t committed to the Red Devils.

The 27-year-old’s United future is yet to be resolved after departing manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Rooney had asked to leave the newly-crowned Premier League champions.

The Red Devils rejected the striker’s request but rumours persist linking the want-away England international with a move to cash-rich Ligue 1 winners Paris Saint-Germain.

Van Nistelrooy, who left United after falling out with Ferguson in 2006, reckons Rooney should only stay if he is still 100 per cent committed to the club.

“It is a matter of how he feels. If he feels he is committed to the club I think there is an opening,” said Van Nistelrooy.

“If he says there isn’t I don’t think there is a future for him but it is up to him.

“I think the fans would love him to stay but it depends on the commitment.

“If he is fully here everyone loves him but when he is not fully committed it is probably better to move on.”

Van Nistelrooy scored 150 goals in 219 appearances for the Red Devils but the Netherlands international only won the Premier League title once during his five-year spell at Old Trafford.
