Ryan Giggs believes Romelu Lukaku will have no problems in front of goal if the Manchester United striker can improve his hold up play in the Manchester United’s derby clash against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Red Devils will welcome the Premier League leaders to the Theatre of Dreams this weekend looking to end Manchester City’s impressive 13-game winning run in the English top flight.

Manchester United signed Lukaku in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window ahead of interest from defending champions Chelsea.

The 24-year-old scored 10 goals in his opening nine games in a Manchester United shirt to seemingly quash concerns about his ability to adapt to life at Old Trafford.

The Manchester United summer signing has only managed to score two goals in his last 13 games in all competitions to raise concerns about Lukaku’s form ahead of the derby.

Lukaku failed to get on the score sheet in Manchester United’s games against Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur to raise concerns about his ability to shine against their biggest rivals.

Former Manchester United midfielder Giggs believes Lukaku needs to improve his hold up play to rediscover his goal-scoring form.

“I think centre-forwards go through droughts and when you’re a Manchester United forward the scrutiny multiplies and that was always going to be the case,” Giggs told Sky Sports.

“I said at the start of the season Lukaku will be judged on the big games because he’ll score goals, there’s no doubt about that. The big games are what will define him as a being a really great United centre-forward.

“I think he’s really important in this game because when he holds the ball up, like he did a couple of times against Arsenal, we’re a different team, whereas when it keeps coming back, like against Liverpool and Chelsea, when he wasn’t holding it up, it is just wave after wave of attacks.

“Once he gets that hold up play the rest will come because he is a goalscorer. I was at the Champions League game on Tuesday night and he didn’t do a lot but his finish for his goal was really good, so that will give him a big lift because going into this game without scoring the pressure would have been even more.”
