Samantha Stosur came from a set down to beat Canadian teenager Eugenie Bouchard 3-6 7-5 6-2 and win the Japan Open title in Osaka.
The former US Open champion sealed her fifth career WTA title and second of the season with a battling victory in two hours and 13 minutes.
“Eugenie was playing really well today,” said Stosur, who has now won multiple WTA titles in a season for the first time. “I just had to stick it out in the second set, and I’m pretty happy with how things went in the third.
“I love playing here. I love the site and the fans are great – I always feel like I have lots and lots of support when I come to Osaka.”
Despite the defeat, the 19-year-old Bouchard – who was competing in her first WTA final – is projected to surpass her career-high of No35 in the new rankings.
Elsewhere, Angelique Kerber won the Linz Open title with a 6-4 7-6(6) victory over former world No1 Ana Ivanovic.
Kerber sealed her third WTA title and first of this season, two days after clinching a berth at the season-ending WTA Championships in Istanbul.
“At the end I was just focusing point to point and not thinking about the match points I already had,” said Kerber.
“I was just trying to stay aggressive in the important moments and I think that was the biggest key to victory at the end. I’m really happy to win my first WTA tournament of the year here.”
