Scott Quigg defeats Jason Booth to win British title

Scott Quigg beat Jason Booth to win the British super bantamweight title in impressive style in Bolton on Saturday night.

The 22-year-old from Bury dominated the fight from the first round, using his size and power advantage to close off the ring and hurt Booth with powerful right hands and his effective jab.

Booth, 33, a former world title challenger, was unable to dictate the tempo of the fight as he usually does and his lack of punching power was more apparent than ever as Quigg walked through all his attacks.

By the third round Booth already looked to be out of ideas as the younger, faster and stronger Quigg continually landed heavy blows, both to the body and head under little pressure.

Quigg, who many thought was inexperienced going into the bout, never looked out of his depth and ruthlessly took apart his opponent, fighting on the inside with body punches and powerful uppercuts.

In between the sixth and seventh round, Booth’s promoter Frank Maloney told him that if he took another round of punishment, he would pull him out of the fight.

Booth battled for the three minutes but Quigg was too dominant for him, again winning the fight on the inside and at the end of the round.

Booth hugged his opponent before walking over to his corner, where Maloney and his corner men threw in the towel to hand Quigg the British title.

The victory improved Quigg’s perfect record to 23 wins, 16 by the way of knockout. Meanwhile, Booth, who will now have to contemplate retirement, sees his record fall to 36 wins, 15 by the way of knockout and eight losses.

“To win this British title means a hell of a lot, and to beat Jason and share the ring with such a great fighter makes it even more worthwhile,” said Quigg.

“To control the fight against Jason from the off shows that I’m improving again.”

Booth added: “I could have carried on a bit more, I wasn’t finished, but there was no chance. He was breaking me down with some nice boxing and he was in control all the time.”

“This kid’s going to go far. He’s really amazing to say how many fights he’s had, he was faultless really.”

“I’ve had a great career and I’ve been fighting forever, but I’ll concentrate on training and we might step down a weight.”
