Everton defender Seamus Coleman is hoping to make his debut for the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday against Norway at the Aviva Stadium.

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni has been tipped to hand the 22-year-old a first senior appearance following a number of eye-catching performances for the Toffees in the Premier League.

Injuries to Paul McShane and Sean St Ledger mean the Everton youngster should play some part in the international friendly.

Coleman said: “A lot of people are saying it and I hope to win my first cap Wednesday night. That would be great for me.

“I think I read somewhere the manager, Mr Trapattoni, saying he sees me as a defender. I’ll see what happens.

“I probably see myself as a full-back but if the manager wants me to play left midfield I will play left midfield. I will play anywhere I can get a game.

“I am learning the roles so it is always good to have a couple of positions.”

The Toffees defender also admitted he does not yet feel like a first team regular at Goodison Park. Everton boss David Moyes has opted to deploy Coleman as both a full-back and winger this season with the former Sligo Rovers star making nine appearances this season – including an impressive display against Arsenal on Sunday.

“I don’t know if I am established,” he continued. “I am still learning every game.

“I know I am not guaranteed my place every week so I am going out there and trying my best. It is going all right for me so far.”
