David Moyes rued a fortunate Shakhtar Donetsk equaliser after Manchester United were denied a rare victory in Ukraine.

Danny Welbeck netted his third goal of the season to give the Premier League champions a first-half lead before Taison levelled with 14 minutes remaining at Donbass Arena in Champions League Group A.

“It’s a good point coming here in the Champions League. The team stood up well tonight. We got a good goal early doors. It looked like we would have stopped them from scoring until the goal,” Moyes told Sky Sports.

“We said at half-time we had to keep the ball better. I’m disappointed we didn’t pass it better. If we got the second goal from Robin [Van Persie] we would have seen it out.

“Their goal as well – it went through Michael Carrick’s legs and through one of their player’s legs before it reaches Vidic and they get a ricochet which gets them the goal. So we were really unlucky to lose a goal.”

On the performance of United’s seasoned pros, Moyes added: “I knew they were going to be very important to me because they’re players who have been there and done it.”

Moyes also backed Welbeck to continue his goal-scoring run after a clinical strike in Donetsk.

“He should. There’s no reason why not. He’s started to score more goals already so let’s hope he continues it.”
