Charlie Nicholas is backing Manchester City to secure a commanding victory at Shakhtar Donetsk in their Champions League opener on Wednesday night.

Pep Guardiola’s men will be eager to lay down a marker in the Champions League as the European crown continues to elude the defending Premier League champions.

Manchester City have lost to domestic rivals in the Champions League round of eight in the last two seasons.

Liverpool FC were 5-2 winners against the Citizens in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2018.

Twelve months later, Tottenham Hotspur managed to edge past Manchester City to thwart Guardiola’s side.

The Citizens will have a point to prove against Shakhtar Donetsk following a surprise 3-2 loss to promoted side Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday.

Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas is backing Manchester City to secure a 4-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine on Wednesday night.

“Manchester City found this one difficult last season. Shakhtar have always brought in a bit of pedigree but that is getting less and less as the years progress,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“They are not quite getting those names anymore and it takes away the creative ability that they were once dangerous with. They are not quite sure whether they should be contesting or not.

“City will be badly winded after the Norwich game. Aymeric Laporte is a massive miss for them. I don’t know why Pep Guardiola decided to leave Kevin de Bruyne out at the weekend.

“This will be a comfortable win to get the Premier League champions back on track.”

The Citizens have a good record against Shakhtar Donetsk in Uefa competitions.

In fact, the two clubs met in the Champions League group stage last season, which saw Manchester City secure a 6-0 home win and a 3-0 away win.

This is Manchester City’s ninth Uefa Champions League campaign.

The defending English champions are looking to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League for the seventh season in a row.
