Aston Villa’s Shay Given backs Darren Bent to find form
Villa goalkeeper believes it is only a matter of time before the striker starts scoring regularly
Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given has backed striker Darren Bent to start finding the net on a regular basis.
Bent, 27, has only scored once in six games this season but the Republic of Ireland stopper says it is only a matter of time before the forward finds his form in front of goal.
“People say that Darren can’t buy a goal at the moment but it will come. We know the quality he has,” said Given ahead of Tuesday’s Carling Cup clash against Bolton Wanderers at Villa Park.
“We got into the final third on numerous occasions against Newcastle but just didn’t have the composure when we got there.
“If Darren can get a goal, I’m sure it will kick-start his season. He’s just got to keep believing in himself. Strikers sort of thrive on confidence.”
Villa have endured a stuttering start to their Premier League campaign, drawing four of their first five games – but Given believes a win on Tuesday would help Alex McLeish’s side begin to put a string of results together.
“We will take the Carling Cup seriously, for sure. It’s one of our best chances of picking up a trophy,” the Irish international added.
“It felt like we lost on Saturday but we are still unbeaten in the league and we will take the pluses from that as well into the cup game.
“But hopefully we can win the game and kick-start a few victories for the rest of the Premier League. Bolton are always a tough side. We know what to expect from them. Owen Coyle has done a fantastic job there and they are a big strong team.”
