Sheriff Tiraspol 0 Tottenham 2: Andre Villas-Boas praises Jermain Defoe after the striker's record-equalling goal
Andre Villas-Boas singled out Jermain Defoe for special praise after the striker’s record-equalling goal helped Tottenham beat Sheriff Tiraspol.
Jan Vertonghen’s header from Christian Eriksen’s cross set Spurs on their way in the 12th minute of the Europa League group-stage clash.
And Defoe’s deflected shot 15 minutes from time doubled their lead as the forward equalled Martin Chivers’ club record of 22 European goals.
“It is some achievement,” Villas-Boas said of Defoe’s tally. “If we continue like this, there is a big chance he will break the record.
“It will be another great achievement for him. I am sure he will achieve it.
“Let’s not celebrate it before it happens, but it will be a great record for him and the club. It was another great performance by Jermain.”
The win ensured that the north London side maintained their 100 per cent record in Group K.
And Defoe admitted his delight at edging closer to breaking the record.
“It was a great moment,” said Defoe. “I was delighted to see it go in because I didn’t really have that many chances.
“As soon as Nacer Chadli squared it to me I thought ‘relax and get a good contact’, and I was delighted to see it go in.
“It’s great to equal the record and I’d love to break it at White Hart Lane, that would be great.”
