Sherwood: It’s ‘unfair’ defending against Liverpool’s Sturridge & Suarez

Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood says Spurs will try to "cover up" Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suárez on Sunday

Tim Sherwood has joked that it would be unfair to let any defender come up against Daniel Sturridge or Luis Suarez ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s trip to Anfield on Sunday.

Sturridge and Suarez became the first Liverpool strike partnership to both score 20 or more top-flight goals in a season since Reds legends Ian St John and Roger Hunt in 1963/64 this week.

They need to be covered up so we need to be responsible in our movements

The England international scored his 20th goal of the Premier League season as Liverpool were 2-1 winners against Sunderland on Wednesday night, taking the partnership’s combined tally to 48 league strikes.

And Sherwood, who famously captained Blackburn Rovers to Premier League glory at Anfield in 1995, vowed his Spurs side would look to contain the Liverpool double act, dubbed SAS.

Asked how to stop Sturridge and Suarez, Sherwood replied: “It’s unfair to let anyone defend 1v1 with those guys. They need to be covered up so we need to be responsible in our movements.

“When we fly bodies forward we have to put cover on our defence as much as we can.”

Earlier in his pre-match media conference, Sherwood admitted that Liverpool’s Uruguayan forward was the Premier League’s standout striker this season after scoring 28 goals in 26 Premier League games.

Questioned whether Suarez was the difference between second-placed Liverpool and sixth-placed Spurs, Sherwood replied: “He certainly helps them, doesn’t he? I don’t want to be disrespectful to the strikers we have, but Luis Suarez has had a period in the Premier League now.

“It looks like he has settled right in and certainly he is the best striker in the division.”
