Sir Alex Ferguson could carry on managing Manchester United for another decade, according to Sir Bobby Charlton.

The 71-year-old Red Devils boss’ retirement plans have been the subject of speculation in recent months amid mounting suggestions that Jose Mourinho could be ready to step in and take over at Old Trafford.

Ferguson, who replaced Ron Atkinson at United in 1986, has guided the club to a staggering 12 Premier League titles, five FA Cup crowns, four League Cups and two Champions League triumphs.

And Charlton, who played under legendary United manager Sir Matt Busby, reckons Ferguson still has the necessary desire to continue at the Red Devils for another decade.

“It could be next week [when he retires], it could be 10 years, it doesn’t matter. We will wait for him. We can’t tell him what to do, he is fantastic,” Charlton told talkSPORT.

“He loves the game and every times he thinks about retiring he has to look carefully at what decision he is making because it is a tough thing for him to do.

“He is so positive and knowledgeable about the game that he won’t make any mistakes. If he retires, it will be his [decision].”

With Charlton having played alongside club legends such as George Best and Denis Law and seeing other great names of the likes of Eric Cantona and Roy Keane turn out at Old Trafford, he is well-placed to judge influential United figures.

But the 75-year-old was emphatic in his praise of the current United manager, whose side are 12 points clear of Manchester City in the title race.

“He is the greatest thing that has ever happened to our club,” added Charlton.
