Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to sign an unnamed transfer target next summer after failing to strike a deal in January.

Aside from the addition of Denmark goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard, the United boss kept his chequebook closed during the mid-season transfer window despite singling out a player he wanted to bring to Old Trafford.

The deal did not come off but Ferguson, who did not reveal who the player was, remains hopeful of landing his target next summer.

“Although I let the transfer window shut without signing a new player, that is because we did our homework some time ago and didn’t have to rush into any emergency buying,” Ferguson told United Review.

“We had an interest in one player, and I thought we had a chance of bringing him in, but the other parties involved weren’t ready and so we have put it away until the summer.

“Billionaire owners have introduced a new world that is turning football on its head,” he continued. “For our part, we cannot afford to sit in an ivory tower. We have to face the challenge.”

The Scot added: “It is a healthy competition and it goes without saying that we will not shirk it and I don’t think we are doing so.”

Meanwhile, Ferguson described Wayne Rooney’s stunning overhead kick in United’s 2-1 victory over derby rivals Manchester City yesterday as the best goal he has ever seen.

Rooney scored 10 minutes from time to give United three points after City’s David Silva had cancelled out Nani’s first-half opener.

“I haven’t seen anything like it, that’s for sure,” Ferguson said. “It reminded me of Denis Law although whether Denis ever put them in with such ferocity, I’m not so sure.

“I can’t ever remember a better goal at Old Trafford. There was a Rooney volley against Newcastle I remember a few years ago with that kind of ferocity and we have had some fantastic goals here.”
